Our History

Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church has deep roots in the faith and history of Monticello, Arkansas. Our story connects Christian ministry with a commitment to education and opportunity within the African American community.

Known in its early years as Second Presbyterian Church, the congregation welcomed the Reverend C. S. Mebane as pastor in 1888. His partnership with missionary and educator Dr. Mary Emilie Holmes helped advance educational opportunities for African American students through Monticello Academy. The church was later renamed Holmes Chapel in recognition of her work and support.

As we look to the future, we honor those whose prayers, service, and perseverance helped shape Holmes Chapel. With gratitude for our past and hope for what lies ahead, we seek to carry that legacy forward sharing the love of Jesus Christ and welcoming others to become part of our continuing story.
